Request a Review

**Update** Please note we are currently running behind schedule. If you have a book you want reviewed by a specific date, at this time, we’re sorry, but we are unable to assure that possibility. While we are not refusing requests, we are not promising reviews will be finished by a specific date. The only exception is reviews posted as part of a book tour. New/upcoming releases still have priority. Even so, we will not provide a definite date for posting.

On a more hopeful note, we’ve recently added another two reviewers to the site, but I needat minimum, twice that number (if you know any good reviewers in need of a home to post their reviews,  please do let them know about this site),

Also, do not expect to notice an immediate change in everything here. We probably will need to adjust to each other’s expectations and determine a routine before I start coaxing them to take on some of the  requested reviews.

So, we’re moving in the right direction. Once we get through the transition period, things will be smoother and y’all will be able to tell I have help. **Update**

We may already have the book you’d like reviewed, so there’s no need to send a copy with your initial inquiry. Even if you’re asking we review an ARC, unless it’s much easier for you send everything at once, please wait until after we’ve agreed to review your book. Even if you’ve sent the book before we agreed to write a review, we may still decline and we will provide a brief explanation for our decision. Before sending a book for review, please send the following information (contact information is at the end of the post):

-Author’s name
-Book title
-Series title and number (if applicable)
-Publisher’s name and purchase URL
-Publication date
-Available formats
-Length (word count and/or page numbers)
-Blurb (will be reprinted on ScuttlebuttReviews with the review)
-Gender pronoun the author prefers (Not necessary, but it helps us write reviews that aren’t clunky with “The Author”)
-Author’s website (not mandatory)
-Additional information you think may be useful (such as giveaway or contest information)

Please do not send: We do not accept requests for books with pedophilia, bestiality, or rape, with few exceptions (which could include a partially shifted character in shifter stories, a scene that is integral to the plot or character development, and/or scenes not written for sexual gratification).

We might accept: Young Adult books featuring minors in sexual situations provided characters involved are of similar ages, and/or the scene is necessary for plot development. Requests for reviews of books with these scenarios are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

Though we review MM Romance, we understand that occasionally a heterosexual encounter may be integral to plot development. Therefore, we will still consider a book for review when a main character has a brief romantic or sexual relationship with a woman (or if there is a MMF scene). In both the genre and review sections of the post, we will clearly state if a book contains MF and/or MMF scenes. Just as some MF romance readers would be uncomfortable with a surprise MM scene featuring main characters, the same is true of some MM readers.

New editions: When reviewing books from our private libraries, we may have an edition that predates what is currently available. Some of these books may have been released through different publishers since our purchase. Reviews of older editions will clearly state there will be some differences between what we reviewed and what the reader will be purchasing, at least in terms of editing, but possibly also with some minor plot changes.

If we have posted a review of your book that has since been released in a new edition, and the author or publisher wants a new review to go with the new addition, please feel free to send a request. But please,  make sure you place the request only if there have been obvious changes made to the content.

ARCs: If requesting a review before a book is released, please have necessary permissions from those involved in the writing and publishing the end. At the moment, we are not guaranteeing reviews by a set date. However, we will make every reasonable effort to give new releases priority, but between receipt of the book and posting the review, there may be posts published that feature older books. This does not mean we are ignoring new releases, but many reviews of older books were written before this site went public, and will be posted periodically.

Reviewers, books, and money: Nobody at ScuttlebuttReviews will accept money in exchange for a more positive review or rating. Similarly, though sometimes we accept books in exchange for a review, we do so with the understanding the reader will review it no differently or with less impartially than with a book the reviewer had purchased themselves. Sometimes we  receive books in exchange for an honest review. These books are not given any special treatment and reviews are a reflection of the reviewer’s thoughts, not the $6 we didn’t spend on that book.

Books are given to the reviewer who shows the most interest.  Reviewers are volunteers who choose which books to review based upon personal tastes. Requiring somebody who dislikes the Young Adult genre to read, then write a review about, a YA book isn’t going to produce a heartfelt review and it isn’t  likely to help anybody. Books are only ever given to the reviewer.

Books in a series: When we receive a request for a book that is part of a series, but is not the first book of that series, we much prefer also reviewing the books that came before, as well as the book requested. The only time this would not apply is when not all books in the series are MM.

Reviews themselves: ScuttlebuttReviews does not promise a positive review. We are honest with our assessments, which means if a book has issues, such as an inconsistent plot, unlikable characters, and/or poor editing, it will reflect in the review. We also do not post reviews just stating our like or dislike of a book without giving an explanation and examples for our opinion. Please remember reviews are as subjective as the books themselves, and while cruelty is not our intention, neither is lying.

The finished review: When a review is published, we also post links to the page to Facebook, Twitter, GoodReads, Amazon, and the publisher’s site (if that option is available). If the review was sent as a request, we will email with a direct link to the post.

Using our reviews elsewhere: Reviews posted on this site may be used, in part or in whole, only if directly quoted, properly credited, and with a proper reference to this site.
